Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus at Heimaey (S), 5 September 2010

Sun, 5 September 2010:
Unprecedented numbers of Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus continue to arrive in Iceland with more than 100 around Garðskagi (S) and nine at Seltjarnarnes (S). A Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus was discovered at Heimaey - 6th for Iceland. Other birds at Heimaey include the adult Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos, a juvenile Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus, a Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca, a Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus, while at least 130 Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus remain. Two Sooty Shearwaters Puffinus griseus between Heimaey and Landeyjarhöfn (S) and two off Sandgerði (SW). A Willow Warbler is at Þorbjörn/Grindavík (SW). One Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata was at Sandgerði (SW).

Sat, 4 September 2010:
An adult Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos and a juvenile Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus were found at Heimaey (S) today where dozens of Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus remain. A Snow Goose Anser caerulescens was seen at Héðinshöfði/Tjörnes (NE). Still one Canada Goose Branta canadensis at Hvalnes/Lón (SE). About twenty Sooty Shearwaters Puffinus griseus on Faxaflói bay (SW). A juvenile Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola and adult Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica are still at Höfn (SE). Four Eurasian Curlews Numenius arquata are at Sandgerði (SW). What is probably an adult hybrid Ring-billed x Common Gull Larus delawarensis x canus remains at Bakkatjörn/Seltjarnarnes (SW), it was reported as an adult Ring-billed Gull in August.

The Walrus Odobenus rosmarus was again at Flateyjardalur (N) this morning. Two drake American Wigeons Anas americana at Njarðvík (SW). Two Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata are at Sandgerði (SW).

Rarities found on this day include a Baird's Sandpiper Calidris bairdii in 1994, a Citrine Wagtail Motacilla citreola in 1997 and a Spotted Sandpiper Actitis macularius in 2005.

A Walrus Odobenus rosmarus was seen at Flateyjardalur (N) last night. Walruses are rare but regular vagrants from East Greenland.

Heimaey is still doing a passable imitation of East Greenland, minus the 2000 m high mountains and ice-filled fjords: i.e. still loads of Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus everywhere. Two drake American Wigeon Anas americana at Njarðvík (SW). One Sooty Shearwater Puffinus griseus at Garður (SW). One Grey Heron Ardea cinerea at Sandgerði (SW). A juvenile Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola and adult Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica are at Höfn (SE). One Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus at Grindavík (SW).

Rarities found on this day include a Black-and-white Warbler Mniotilta varia in 1970.

An astonishing 120 Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus are at Heimaey (S) which is easily a record number in Iceland!!!! A subadult Thayer's Gull Larus thayeri was reported from Sandgerði (SW). Two Sooty Shearwaters Puffinus griseus at Garður (SW). One Grey Heron Ardea cinerea also at Sandgerði (SW).

Two Sooty Shearwaters Puffinus griseus at Garður (SW) where there is also a Grey Heron Ardea cinerea and Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata. A Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix and a Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica are at Höfn (SE). At least 27 Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus remain at Heimaey (S) while a single one was seen at Önundarhorn/Eyjafjöll (S). Two drake American Wigeons Anas americana at Njarðvík (SW).

Up to 27 Lapland Longspurs Calcarius lapponicus at Heimaey (S). Lapland Longspurs are scarce migrants from East Greenland and occasional breeders in Iceland. Flocks of this size are rare in Iceland.

An adult Ring-billed Gull Larus delawarensis is at Bakkatjörn/Seltjarnarnes (SW). A Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix at Kvísker/Öræfi (SE).

A Pectoral Sandpiper Calidris melanotos was seen at Njarðvík (SW).

A drake Surf Scoter Melanitta perspicillata and a drake King Eider Somateria spectabilis are at Þvottárskriður (SE). The Common Crane Grus grus is still at Hvalnes/Lón (SE). The drake Lesser Scaup Aythya affinis is now at Þveit/Nes (SE) with two drake Common Goldeneyes Bucephala clangula. A first-summer male Common Rosefinch Carpodacus erythrinus is still singing at Vogar/Vatnsleysuströnd (SW).

The drake Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris at Úlfarsá/Reykjavík (SW). A Pomarine Skua Stercorarius pomarinus was seen at Bugsvötn near Ólafsvík (W). An adult and first-summer Little Gull Hydrocoloeus minutus are at Syðrivogar/Mývatn (NE). Still three Sabine's Gulls Larus sabini at Ósland/Höfn (SE). A pair of Common Crossbills Loxia curvirostra was seen feeding young at Hallormsstaður (E) and three are at Skorradalur (SW).

No less than four Sabine's Gulls Larus sabini appeared at Ósland/Höfn (SE), at least three of them adults. A drake Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris at Leirhöfn/Melrakkaslétta (NE). Single Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica at Langhús/Fljót (N) and Kvísker/Öræfi (SE). A Eurasian Siskin Carduelis spinus was seen at Egilsstaðir (E).
CETACEAN SIGHTINGS:
A pod of seven Long-finned Pilot Whales Globicephala melas was seen (from the shore) migrating west off Vík/Mýrdalur (S). Not a cetacean, but still noteworthy in Icelandic waters, a Basking Shark Cetorhinus maximus was seen on a whalewatching trip in Faxaflói bay, off Reykjavík (SW).
