Barrow's Goldeneye

The Barrow's Goldeneye is a character bird of the Mývatn area.
It doesn't nest elsewhere in Iceland or in Europe.
The population counts only about 2000 birds,
most of which overwinter at Mývatn.
They feed mainly on midge and blackfly larvae.
The ducks can be seen in dense flocks ,but during the breeding season
they become aggressive and defend territories on open water.
