Short CV for Dr. Birgir Hrafnkelsson

Birgir Hrafnkelsson graduated from Texas A&M University in 1999 with a Ph.D. degree in Statistics , where he worked under the direction of Prof. H. Joseph Newton .

 

He received a B.S. degree and a M.S degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iceland in 1993 and 1995, respectively. For his M.S. degree, he took courses at the Technical University of Denmark . His Master's Thesis advisor was Prof. Guðmundur R. Jónsson .

 

Following his Ph.D., Hrafnkelsson was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Statistics at The Ohio State University , where he worked under the direction of Prof. Noel Cressie.

 

He was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Modelling Department at the Marine Research Institute, Reykjavík, Iceland, where he worked under the direction of Prof. Gunnar Stefánsson .

 

Hrafnkelsson worked as a Researcher at deCODE genetics from 2001 to 2003.

 

He was an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering , at the University of Iceland from 2003 to 2007.

 

He was Research Scholar at Applied Mathematics Division, Science Institute at the University of Iceland from 2008 to 2011.

 

He was an Associate Professor of Statistics at the Department of Mathematics since Faculty of Physical Sciences which is under School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at University of Iceland from 2012 to 2016.

 

He is a Professor of Statistics at the Department of Mathematics since 2016 at Faculty of Physical Sciences which is under School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at University of Iceland.

 

His research interests include Bayesian hierarchical modeling, spatial statistics, extreme values, time series and statistical modeling of environmental data.
