FIELD WORK EXPERIENCE

Fifteen years experience in catching and ringing birds (mainly mist-netting, walk-in trapping and cannon-netting). Also catching moulting geese (pinkfeet, greylags and barnacle geese) and seabirds including auks, kittiwakes, fulmars, storm-petrels and gannets.

I have been running colour-ringing schemes on purple sandpipers, lesser black-backed gulls and blackbirds. I´ve also used radio-transmitters on gulls and followed them with directional hand-held antenna. Familiar with blood sampling and standard measurements.

Bird count experience includes line transects applying distance sampling (both direct measurements and to zones), point counts, territory mapping, cliff transects (with telescope) and counts from photographs.

I´ve worked with birds in all major habitats throughout Iceland. Field work experience abroad includes studies on breeding waders at Zackenberg, NE-Greenland in June 2009 (Dr. Jeroen Reneerkens in charge) and catching and ring-reading of waders in Mauritania, W-Africa in December 2009 (Prof. Theunis Piersma in charge).

LAB WORK EXPERIENCE

Extraction of DNA from feathers and blood. Performing PCR and electrophoresis. Attended a course about stable isotopes at Stockholm University (Prof. Anders Angerbjorn in charge) and prepared my own samples (feathers) for running. Also been measuring egg-shell thickness (Stockholm University). Good experience in dissecting birds.
