Freyinga saga

Week One

The Saga

The Freyinga saga is written in Iceland sometime in the 13th century. Most of the events related in it are not mentioned in any other sources. It is thus rather hard to judge to what extent it is fantastical and to what extent it is historical.

The Text

This is the first chapter. It starts setting the background for the story.

The Characters

King Haraldr hrfagri is the semi-legendary king who united Norway by the sword. Aur djpauga is mentioned in other sagas as well. She became an important Icelandic matriarch. In this story she is called 'djpauga; the deeply wealthy' but in other sources the epithet is 'djpga; the deep minded'. Grmr kamban is mentioned in other sources as being the first settler of the Faroes. His descendants sacrificed to him after his death. With first settler the Norse always meant the first Norse settler. Irish monks don't count.
None of the people mentioned here occur again in the saga. The kin of the Gtuskeggjar will be important, though.

The Manuscript Text

Here is a version closer to the actual manuscript. Note that in this case '' stands for an 'o' with a hook above it.
Madr er nefnndr Grimr kamban hann bygde fystr Freyiar a dgum Haralldz hins harfagra. a flydu firir hans ofriki fjolde manna. settuzst sumir j Freyium ok bygdu ar en sumir leitudu til annarra eydelanda. Audr hin diupaudga for til Jslandz ok kom vid Freyjar ok gipti ar Olofu dottur orstins rauds. ok er adan kominn hinn mesti kynattr Freyinga er eir kalla Gtuskeggia er bygdu j Austrey.

The Places

You should definitely find a good map of the Faroes to have as a reference when reading the story. The Eastern Isle, Austrey, is the second biggest of the Faroes. Gata is near the east end.

The Reading

This week's text read by me.
I also have a guest reader - my brother.
The pronunciation is modern in every respect - it might thus be easier to follow with the text in modern spelling.
