Measuring and displaying fabric

With new instruments over 1000 crystals can routinely be measured per thin section.  Showing the orientation distribution, fabric, on a point plot is therefore often not a feasible option.

New method for displaying orientation data

Below is an example from Siple Dome, Antarctica.  The thin section shown is from 658 m depth.

The point plot has about 73 crystal orientations measured.

From the point plot (left) alone it is difficult to see the pattern.  Especially, whether there are a few or many crystals that make up each cluster.  But, using the new contour-plot (right) technique, we can clearly see that there are two maxima !
