Phonetics 1 - Assignment 4

Set 19 November 2008. The deadline for this assignment is Wednesday 3 December at 10 o'clock in the morning - a week after the final lecture.
You may return it by email to me at peturk@hi.is, or as a print-out or handwritten answer, at the Service desk in Gimli or in my pigeon-hole near the main entrance in Nýi garður.  You may also send by post (postal date counts) to: Pétur Knútsson, Nýja garði, Háskóli Íslands, 101 Reykjavík.

Question 1
Now we have gone over in class the questions of how to show sentence stresses, weak forms, punctuation etc. Review your answer for Assignment 3 and write a brief report on your main mistakes.
In particular, check your transcription in a dictionary - I mention this because many people seemed have ignore the instruction to use a dictionary, and seem to be making up their own pronunciation! Give me a list of your main transcription mistakes.

Question 2
Again, choose a passage of modern English from a novel, newspaper or magazine. Take the first 50 words, and then go on to the end of the sentence. Paste or copy the passage, or include a photocopy.

• TRANSCRIBE the passage into RP or GA, saying which. Remember to use a dictionary.
• In your transcription, show sentence stresses by putting the stress mark in front of the stressed syllables.
• Transcribe the weak forms of unstressed words wherever appropriate.
