Note that Wells's Dictionary writes the length mark with American
tense vowels,
so LOT is given as .
This is just to save space in the dictionary (for instance a word like 'father',
which has the PALM vowel in both accents, does not need to be written twice).
In these pages, however, I shall omit the length marks after American tense vowels.
